Lesson 1: Jobs that Help the Community
Omar, Youssef and Salma do research about jobs that help the community:
- Mechanic: fixes vehicles (Youssef likes fixing things).
- Water resources engineer: makes sure homes and schools get clean water (Omar's choice).
- Paramedic: helps people in emergencies, a brave job that saves lives (Salma's choice).
- Traffic officer: helps people cross the road and controls cars.
- Street cleaner: keeps the city clean and beautiful. Others: tailor, architect, delivery person. Key words: community (a group of people who live or work together), research (look for information to learn more), vehicles, emergency (a sudden situation that needs quick help), brave, control.
Lesson 2: Let's Help Our Community
Mariam, Hadi and Nour see garbage near the park and dangerous, noisy traffic near the school. They plan to clean the park, bring garbage bags, ask the teacher to make posters ("Please use the bin"), make signs that say "Drive Slowly!", and walk or ride bikes. The moral: when we all help, things get better.
Language in Use: can / can't / able to (ability in the present)
- can / can't + base verb: I can bring some garbage bags. We can't cross the road safely.
- am / is / are + able to + base verb: She is able to speak with the traffic officer.
- Question: Can they clean the room today?
Lesson 3: The Proud Rose
A beautiful red rose in the desert is proud of her looks and makes fun of the rough cactus with sharp thorns. In a very hot summer, the rose becomes dry, weak and thirsty. She sees a bird drink water from inside the cactus. The rose says sorry, and the kind cactus shares his water. From that day she never judged anyone by how they looked. Moral: do not judge others by how they look; be kind and say sorry when you are wrong. Words: thorns (sharp points on a plant), petals, peck (hit or pick up with a beak), unpleasant. Pronunciation (word stress): in two-syllable words the stress is usually on the first syllable (TAI-lor); in some three-syllable words it is on the second (me-CHAN-ic).
Lesson 4: A Biography of an Egyptian Hero
Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed was born in Egypt in 1933, studied at Ain Shams University in Cairo and continued his research in the United States. He became an expert in chemistry and nanoscience (the study of very tiny things). He is known for El-Sayed's Rule and for work with gold nanoparticles that help doctors detect and treat some types of cancer. He has received many awards, including the U.S. National Medal of Science. Tips for writing a biography: start with key facts, tell about early life, say what they did, use correct time order, add fun facts, use clear simple language, end with their impact.
Think and Create
Solve a community problem such as food waste: find the causes, the effects and creative solutions (plan meals, shop smart, support food banks, feed leftovers to animals, store food properly).
