Lesson 1: Caring for Plants
Laila talks with her grandpa about the plants in his garden. Plants need water, sunlight and care to grow well. Grandpa grows herbs like basil, mint and parsley, and also hibiscus and jasmine, guava and fig trees, and olive trees. He waters the plants early in the morning, pulls out weeds, checks for insects and sometimes uses natural fertilizer. Laila's dad drinks mint tea in the evening, and the family makes a tasty drink from hibiscus. Olives are full of oil, and Egyptians have grown olive trees for many years. Useful verbs: pull out (weeds), water, grow, check (for insects), care for.
Lesson 2: How's the Weather in Your City?
Youssef writes an email to John about the weather in Egypt today:
- Alexandria: windy and rainy, dark clouds, high waves, wet streets, people stay indoors.
- Cairo: warm and sunny, children play in the parks, birds fly in a clear sky.
- Aswan: hot, strong sun; farmers water plants early in the morning; people drink a lot of water, wear hats and sunglasses and sit in the shade to protect themselves. Checking the weather every day helps people decide what to wear and how to take care of their homes and plants.
Language in Use: Present Continuous
We use it for actions happening now (at the moment).
- Positive: subject + am / is / are + verb-ing (Ahmed is playing football now.)
- Negative: subject + am / is / are + not + verb-ing (They are not playing in the garden.)
- Question: am / is / are + subject + verb-ing? (Are you watching TV now? Yes, I am.) With a Wh- word: What is he doing now?
Lesson 3: The Wonderful Nile River
The Nile is the longest river in the world, about 6,650 kilometers long. It flows through Egypt from south to north and brings life to the desert country. Big fish like Nile perch and tilapia swim in it, crocodiles live in it (they are dangerous), and birds like kingfishers, herons and ducks come to drink and find food. In the past the Nile flooded and brought good soil, so farmers grew wheat and vegetables. It gives people and animals water and people travel on it in boats. Ancient Egyptians thought it was special and built temples near it. Pronunciation: the short /e/ sound (ten, bed) and the short /I/ sound (sit, bit).
Lesson 4: An Unforgettable Trip to Wadi El Rayan
A school class goes to Wadi El Rayan National Park in Fayoum with Miss Salma and Mr. Ahmed. They see farms, sand dunes, lakes, waterfalls and palm trees. The park protects rare animals and plants. In the afternoon they visit Wadi El-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, where scientists found skeletons of ancient whales because the place was once covered by the sea. A boy loses his camera, and Mr. Ahmed finds it under a bench. Writing a story: say when and where, say who is in the story, use first / next / finally, include a problem and a solution, use the past simple, add interesting details and finish with an ending.
Think and Create
Make an Egyptian wildlife fact card: choose an animal or plant, draw or find a picture, write three easy facts (where it lives, the weather there, one special thing) and share with the class.
