What is a glossary?

A glossary is a list of words with their meanings. At the end of the book, the words are grouped by topic. (Parents: read a word, then read its meaning, and ask your child to say the word in a sentence.)

Action verbs and classroom words

• write: to form letters or words on a surface.
• draw: to make pictures using a pen, pencil, or crayon.
• read: to look at and understand written words.
• color: to fill in pictures or areas with color.
• clean: to remove dirt or mess.
• play: to take part in games or fun activities.
• sit: to rest with your bottom on a surface. stand: to be on your feet.
• raise: to lift something up. open: to move something so that it is not closed. close: to shut something. sing: to make music with your voice.
• student: a person who is learning in school. teacher: a person who helps students learn.
• chair: a piece of furniture for sitting. desk: a table used for writing or working.
• eraser: a tool used to remove pencil marks. ruler: a tool used to measure or draw straight lines. pencil: a tool used to write or draw.
• bag: a container used to carry school supplies. pencil case: a small container to hold pens and pencils.
• please is a polite word used to ask for something. thank you is a polite phrase to show appreciation. good morning is a greeting used in the morning. goodbye is a word used when leaving.

Daily routines

• wake up: to stop sleeping and become awake. sleep: to rest your body and mind by closing your eyes.
• brush: to clean using a brush. wash: to clean using water. walk: to move by putting one foot in front of the other.
• doctor, nurse, hospital, healthy, germs, soap, toothbrush, tissue, water, vegetables, fruit are words about staying healthy.

My home

• kitchen: a room where food is prepared and cooked. bedroom: a room where someone sleeps. bathroom: a room where people take care of hygiene. living room: a room for relaxing or spending time with family.
• house: a building where people live. table, couch, lamp, mirror, sink, cup, spoon, refrigerator are things in a home.

People and relationships

mother (a female parent), father (a male parent), sister (a female sibling), brother (a male sibling), grandmother, grandfather, uncle, aunt, cousin, family, parents, baby, child, children.

Colors, shapes and sounds

red, blue, green, yellow; circle (a round shape with no corners), square (four equal sides), triangle (three straight sides and three angles), rectangle (four sides and four right angles), oval; rose, glue, cube, nose, thick, thin, thumb, thunder, math, teeth.
