What we learn

In this unit we learn to say hello, name things in our classroom, and read and write short sentences. (Parents: read each part aloud and let your child repeat.)

Greetings

• Hello, I'm Ali.
• What's your name? My name is ...
• Good morning, Ms. Amira.
• May I sit down?
• Goodbye.

Practice with a friend. Student A says: "Hello, what is your name?" Student B says: "My name is ...".

Classroom words

teacher, student, chair, desk, board, window, door, book, notebook, pen, bag, ruler, eraser, pencil case.

Say: "I sit on a chair at school." "My teacher is kind. She helps me learn." "At the end of the day, I say goodbye."

This and That

• We say This is for something near us: This is a chair. This is a bag.
• We say That is for something far from us: That is a door. That is a window.
• We ask: What is this? We answer: This is a ...
• We can also ask: Where is the door? It's over there.

We use a before most words (a desk, a chair) and an before a vowel sound (an eraser).

Making sentences

Put the words in the right order. Example: "is / This / a / desk." becomes "This is a desk." Another example: "He is a teacher."

Phonics: short vowel sounds

• Short a (like in cat): cat, hat, cap, man, map, fan.
• Short e (like in pen): pen, ten, hen.
• Short i (like in zip): zip, fig, bin, big, pin.

Say the sound, then read the word, then trace it with a pencil.

Let's write

Write two simple sentences about classroom items: "This is my pencil case." "This is my bag." Then draw and label four objects in your classroom.
