What we learn
In this unit we say who is in our family, count from 1 to 5, and learn the letters Nn, Pp, Hh, and Dd. (Parents: ask your child to point to each family member in a picture.)
Who's in my family?
Maya and Sara talk about family.
- Maya: Who is this?
- Sara: This is my father. And this is my mother. They are my parents.
- Maya: Do you have any brothers?
- Sara: Yes! I have 1 brother.
- Maya: Cool! I have 2 sisters.
Family words: father, mother, parents, brother(s), sister(s), grandmother, grandfather. Useful sentences:
- Who's this? This is my father.
- I have 2 sisters.
Numbers from 1 to 5
Omar and Aly count things.
- How many books do you have? There are 3 books.
- There are 4 flowers.
- There is 1 sun.
- I have 5 apples. Do you want one?
- Yes, please! I have 1 apple now. Thank you!
We say "There is 1 ..." for one thing and "There are 3 ..." for more than one.
- How many butterflies are there? There is 1 butterfly.
- How many books are there? There are 4 books. We count objects, match them with the right number, and trace the numbers 1 to 5.
The letters
- Nn: neck, net.
- Pp: pencil, pizza, potato, panda.
- Hh: hat, hair, hands, horse.
- Dd: duck, drum, door, dog. We trace each letter in uppercase and lowercase, and name the pictures that start with it.
Review 1
In Review 1 we match pictures with words, put v or X for sentences such as "The grass is green" and "The sky is yellow", count and match numbers, circle beginning letters, find the odd one out, draw our family, and color the things we can see in a garden.
Remember
- Mother and father are my parents.
- "There is" is for 1 and "there are" is for more than 1.
