What we learn

In this unit we talk about things in a garden, name colors and shapes, and learn the letters Ss and Aa. (Parents: point to the pictures and ask your child to say the words.)

In the garden

Maya and Hana look at a garden.

• The grass is green.
• I can see a flower. The flower is red.
• The sky is blue.
• I can see a tree.
• A butterfly! The butterfly is flying near the tree.
• I can see a little bird in the tree.

Garden words: sky, butterfly, grass, flower, tree, bird. Useful sentences:

• I can see a bird.
• What's this? This is a butterfly.
• The sun is yellow.

Colors

We learn four colors: yellow, green, blue, and red.

• The sky is blue.
• The grass is green.
• The sun is yellow.
• The flower is red.

Shapes

We learn four shapes: square, circle, triangle, and rectangle.

• What shape is this? This is a circle. This is a square.
• What color is the square? The square is blue.
• What color is the triangle? The triangle is yellow.
• The triangle has 3 sides.
• The rectangle has 4 sides.

Letter Ss

• Words that begin with Ss: spider, sun, snake, star.
• We circle pictures that start with Ss, trace the letter in uppercase (S) and lowercase (s), and color the pictures.

Letter Aa

• Words that begin with Aa: arrow, apple, ant, axe.
• We trace Aa, match each picture with its word, and circle the beginning letter.

Remember

• A triangle has 3 sides, and a rectangle has 4 sides.
• We name colors using sentences like "The sky is blue."
