Grammar Rules
Past simple: used for actions that started and ended in the past. Add -ed to regular verbs (moved, helped, worked). Irregular verbs have special forms (go - went, buy - bought, spend - spent, have - had, fight - fought, do - did). Examples: Dr. Samira Moussa was a hero. We moved to Luxor three years ago. Negative and questions: use did / didn't + base verb. Nada didn't go to school yesterday. Where did you go last summer? What did you do last Friday? Verb to be in the past: I / he / she / it → was; we / you / they → were (She was a great leader. They were happy). Time words: yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 1952. Word building: a suffix is added to the end of a word (power → powerful, tour → tourist, agree → agreement, think → thinker); a prefix is added to the beginning to change the meaning (happy → unhappy, correct → incorrect, regular → irregular, like → dislike, afraid → unafraid). The root is the base word. Commas: use a comma when listing items (I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes), when joining clauses with linking words (I wanted to help, but I didn't know how), and when addressing people (Soha, could you help me?).
Reading and Listening
An Egyptian Hero: Dr. Samira Moussa. Born in Egypt in 1917, she loved science from a young age, became one of the first Egyptian women to get a PhD in Atomic Radiation, taught at Cairo University and traveled to the United States for research. She believed science should be used for peace and said, "My wish for cancer treatment is to be as cheap as aspirin." She died in a car accident in 1952 and is a symbol of hope for Egyptian girls who learn to be brave, caring and determined. A Great Egyptian Thinker: Dr. Gamal Hemdan. A famous Egyptian geographer and writer, born in 1928 in Qalyubia. He studied geography at Cairo University and got his PhD from a university in England. He combined geography, history and politics to explain why Egypt is special. His most famous book is "The Personality of Egypt". He won the State Appreciation Award in 1986 and believed Egypt's location makes it strong and powerful. He died in 1993. Dr. Mohamed Ghoniem is a famous Egyptian doctor who developed new methods for kidney transplants, is kind to patients, and inspires young doctors. He shows that one person can make a big difference. Listening: Noha's role model is her mother, who works hard and helps others; a dialog about Ahmed El-Mansy and the courage of soldiers. A short biography of the young Egyptian swimmer Malak shows hard work and never giving up. Story Time, Chapter Three: The Greatest Lessons. In the final room the children find a glowing book with the values: Responsibility, Curiosity, Teamwork, Respect, Determination, Courage. Mr. Adam adds honesty. The children promise to use these values at school, at home and online, and learn that the greatest lessons are about kindness, respect and never giving up.
Language Skills and Functions
Writing a biography: start by saying who your role model is and why; describe what they did using the past simple; mention qualities (brave, kind, determined). Review 1: vocabulary (smartboard, kinesthetic, goal, cheerful, achievement), listening about the Cairo Monorail and digital learning, writing an email to a teacher, classifying words, and reading a passage about technology and learning (digital devices help students access information; students must learn to use technology wisely; a mix of old and new methods is important).
Solved Exercises
- Complete with the past simple: "My friend ______ (be) absent yesterday." Answer: was.
- Rewrite in the past simple: "When does your dad travel for work?" Answer: When did your dad travel for work?
Common Mistakes
- Using the present with past time words: "I help my mom yesterday" is wrong; say "I helped".
- Adding -ed to irregular verbs (goed, buyed) instead of went, bought.
- Using did + past verb (Did she went?) instead of did + base verb.
