Grammar Rules

First conditional: talks about the probable result of an action. Form: If / when + present simple, will + base verb. Examples: If you study hard, you'll pass the test. If you don't study hard, you won't pass the test. You will pass the test if you study hard. Common mistakes: If Nawal gets (not get) to school early, she'll skip... ; If you eat less sugar, you will be (not will healthy) healthy and strong. Should / shouldn't: we use should + base verb to give advice (You should study hard) and shouldn't + base verb to say what is not a good idea (You shouldn't waste your time). We say We shouldn't be careless when we cross the road, not "We be careless". Synonyms and antonyms: a synonym has the same meaning (consequence - result; decision - choice); an antonym has the opposite meaning (wise - foolish; positive - negative; responsible - careless). Punctuation: the exclamation point (!) ends a sentence that expresses strong emotion (That movie was fantastic! Be careful. The floor is wet!). Use commas in lists, a question mark at the end of a question and a period for statements.

Reading and Listening

Think Before You Choose: Youssef planned a small birthday party and invited eight close friends who had been responsible. Two classmates, one of whom had been careless, asked to join a day before. Youssef evaluated the positive and negative sides, politely explained that the party was only for close friends who had behaved well, and encouraged them to be more responsible. They understood and respected his decision. Message: if everyone thinks well before taking a decision, they won't make mistakes. Decisions and Consequences (listening): If you think carefully before you decide, you will avoid problems; all choices have consequences; our decisions affect our future; finishing homework before playing is a good decision. Akmal stayed home to study for a test instead of going to the park, passed the test and felt proud. An Interview with an Athlete: A Wise Decision: Adam injured his foot before a big race and had to choose between taking a risk and resting. He talked to his coach, discussed the consequences ("If I run, it will make the injury worse. If I rest, I will recover fully for the next race"), decided he shouldn't run, recovered and won a gold medal in the next race. Advice: think carefully and ask for advice before taking a risk. Story Time, Chapter One: Never Give Up (The Dream Team): At the village invention fair, Sara, Omar, Zain, Lily and Karim decide to build a Water-Saving Machine. Omar wants to take the lead and finish quickly, so Lily feels left out. Sara says, "We need to be fair. Everyone's ideas matter." Karim adds that they must have honesty. They agree to respect each other and give everyone a chance to speak, and keep trying. Roles: Zain designed the model, Omar fixed the pipes, Lily suggested eco-friendly materials, Karim tested the water flow and Sara kept everyone organized. Message: fairness, honesty, determination and teamwork.

Language Skills and Functions
