Lesson 1: Treasures of Egypt
Natural resources are things found in nature that help us live: sunlight, water, wind, soil, minerals, and fossil fuel. Mr. Hani and his students talk about Egypt's resources.
- The Nile River is the most important water resource. It provides water for drinking and farming.
- Oil and natural gas are used to make fuel and electricity.
- Egypt grows cotton, wheat, and many fruits on the fertile land (land with rich soil) along the Nile and in the Delta.
- Egypt's deserts contain gold, iron, and other minerals, used to make jewelry and buildings and to help the country grow. We must use natural resources wisely.
Lesson 2: Metals and Minerals in Our World
- Gold is soft, shiny, and easy to shape. It is used for coins and jewelry.
- Diamond is a rare mineral, even more valuable than gold.
- Copper is a strong metal used for electrical wires, pipes, and tools. It is cheaper than gold. Egypt gets most of its copper and gold from the Eastern Desert.
- Iron is super strong and is used for cars, ships, airplanes, and bridges. Miners dig deep into the ground to get minerals. Minerals are non-renewable: they take millions of years to form, so we must never waste them.
Language in use: Comparative adjectives
We compare two things.
- Short adjectives (1 syllable): add -er + than. Gold is cheaper than diamond.
- Adjectives ending in -y: change y to i and add -er. Amira is happier than Mohamed.
- Long adjectives (2+ syllables): use more ... than (or less ... than). Diamond is more valuable than gold.
- Irregular: good → better, bad → worse, little → less, many/much → more.
Lesson 3: Story Time — "Just Watch!"
A big ship got stuck in thick mud near the shore. Big machines tried to help but failed and laughed at the little digger. The little digger said, "Just watch!", dug carefully around the ship and cleared the path. The ship floated free and thanked him. Moral: size does not matter; what matters is using your strength to help others. Words: cargo (goods carried by a large ship), load (put things onto ships), thick (not thin), path (a way for traveling), give up (stop trying), digger (a machine for digging).
Pronunciation: Prefixes
A prefix is added before a word to change its meaning. dis- means "not" (dislike). bi- means "two" (bicycle). mis- means "wrongly" (misspell). If the base word has one syllable, the stress is on the base word; if it has two syllables, the stress is often on the prefix.
Lesson 4: Writing — Who Am I?
In an object-perspective narrative, a non-human thing such as water or gold "speaks" in the first person ("I am water"). Use I, me, my; describe it with the five senses and adjectives; end by saying why you are important.
Think and Create: A Poster
Create a poster called "My Gold" with pictures of people and things valuable to you.
