Goal words

goal, plan, step, practice, try, celebrate, success, achieve.

• A goal is something you want to achieve.
• Karim has a goal to be a doctor.
• Laila has a plan for the future.
• Nour tries hard to be a great swimmer.
• Mariam celebrates passing the exam.
• You should take a step to be a better student.

Present continuous tense

We use the present continuous for actions happening now or around now. We use am, is or are + a verb with -ing.

• I am practicing.
• Samer is scoring a goal.
• The boys are celebrating.
• Samer is trying to get better at football. He is training every day.

Sound practice: three-consonant clusters

Some words begin with three consonants: spr-, spl-, str-, scr-.

• spr: spring, spray
• spl: splash, split
• str: street, string
• scr: screen, scratch

Story: Mona learns to ride a bike

Mona is learning how to ride her red bike. She is practicing every day in the garden after school. First, she is holding the bike and walking with it. Then, she is pushing her feet on the pedals. Now, she is riding around the garden path. She is feeling proud. Practice brings success.

Story: Tamer's exam

Tamer studied hard every day for his math exam. On the exam day, he felt nervous. Then, he answered all the questions. Later, the teacher told him that he got full marks. Tamer felt very proud and happy. He celebrated with his family at home. They clapped, smiled and said, "Well done!"

Story: Helping others succeed

Yara is a fast runner. She practices every day at the school field. One day, her friend needed help getting ready for a race. Yara showed her how to run and practice. They ran together every day. On race day, her friend ran well and smiled. They both celebrated their success with big cheers.

Review of Units 4, 5 and 6

• Feelings: happy, scared, shy, tired, excited, proud, nervous.
• Hard c and g say /k/ and /g/ (cat, go); soft c and g say /s/ and /j/ (city, giraffe).
• Past simple: Yesterday, Salma played with her doll. Last week, we visited the zoo.
• Present continuous: Now, she is eating her lunch. Look! The boys are running in the garden.
• Linking words: then, because, so, after, first.
• Fix sentences with a capital letter at the start and a period or question mark at the end.
