Rule name: Can (ability) Structure: Subject + can + base verb. Negative: cannot / can't. Question: Can + subject + base verb? Examples: She can read English. They can play football. I can't drive. Can you swim? Remember: never add -s or to after can (She can plays - wrong; He can drives - wrong; They can playing - wrong).
Rule name: Should (advice) Structure: Subject + should + base verb. Negative: shouldn't. Question: Should + subject + base verb? Examples: He should sleep early. We shouldn't waste water. Should I drink more water? You should study hard. Remember: no "to" and no -ing after should (You should to eat - wrong; We should helping - wrong).
Summary: can = ability (I can use a computer); should = advice (We should use technology safely).
Language Skills & Functions
- Reading - Jobs around us: Amir is a young programmer who works in a small office and uses a computer every day; he can write code and create simple apps and works with a team. His friend Sana is a doctor who works in a hospital, helps sick people, gives medicine and talks to patients kindly. Both use technology in their jobs, communicate with others and work together. The main idea: jobs and how people use technology.
- Listening - Technology at work: Omar works at a desk, logs in and checks his emails, types reports and sends messages, sometimes shares information online (but should not share personal information), and uses technology to communicate with his team.
- Reading - Teamwork: people work in teams in many jobs: a teacher works with other teachers, a doctor works with nurses in a hospital to help patients, an engineer works with other engineers to build things and solve problems. Teamwork is important because people can share ideas and help each other. Technology helps people communicate online easily (send emails, share files, talk together). Good teamwork makes work easier, faster and better.
- Pronunciation - word stress in multi-syllable words: a syllable is a part of a word (doc-tor = 2 syllables; pro-gram-mer and com-pu-ter = 3 syllables). Stress means one part is stronger, louder and longer: DOCtor (not docTOR), proGRAMmer, comPUter. In the exercises: DOCtor, comPUter, proGRAMmer, HOSpital, TEAcher.
- Speaking: ask and answer about future jobs ("What do you want to be in the future?" "I want to be a programmer." "Why?" "Because I like computers."), and about how technology helps people communicate (send emails, share files).
- Writing - blog post tips: start with a title; write a short introduction (1-2 sentences saying what the topic is); write the body (2-4 sentences with main ideas); write a simple ending (one sentence of opinion or advice); use simple language and linking words (and, but, because, so, then); use the right grammar - can (ability) and should (advice). Model post: technology is important in many jobs; a teacher uses it to create lessons and videos; a doctor uses computers to check patients and write reports; a programmer writes code and creates apps; technology helps people communicate and work faster and better, and we should use it safely and responsibly.
- Assessment corner: vocabulary multiple choice (patient, team, messages, computer, communicate), gap-fill with can/should and a paragraph on "Working in a Team".
