Grammar Rules
Rule name: Present Continuous Structure: Subject + am / is / are + verb-ing. Use: for actions happening now, at the moment of speaking, or around now (this week, this year). Signal words: now, right now, at the moment, look!, listen!, shh! Examples: Look! The teacher is writing on the board. / I am doing my homework at the moment. / Shh! We are studying for our exams right now. / He is working hard to reach his goal this year. Subject + verb be: I am; he/she/it is; we/you/they are. Never use the base verb after be (She is read - wrong; She is reading - correct).
Language Skills & Functions
- Reading - "Learning for the Future": learning helps us reach our dreams; every student has a different goal; students must study hard every day to prepare for exams and feel proud and happy when they pass; having an ambition is very important because it gives you a reason to work hard (some students want to be doctors, others engineers); homework helps you practice what you learned in class; even when work is difficult a clear goal keeps you moving forward; education is the key to a bright future.
- Listening - a conversation between Omar and his teacher: Omar is studying plants for his science project and is reading his book; he is working with Ali; they are trying their best because they have a big ambition.
- Reading - "Planning for Success": setting goals is the first step to succeed; with a clear ambition students focus better; they may face challenges, but teamwork helps everyone share ideas and finish big projects on time (for example, one student draws the pictures and another writes the report); every small step is important; success is a journey that needs patience and a lot of effort.
- Pronunciation - word stress: in words with more than one syllable one part is stronger, longer and louder. Two syllables, first part strong: FO-cus, PRO-ject, HOME-work. Two syllables, second part strong: ex-AM, suc-CEED. Three syllables, middle part strong: am-BI-tion, a-CHIEVE-ment. Sentence rhythm: we stress the important words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives) and say small words (a, the, in, to, am) quickly: I am STUDying for an exAM.
- Speaking: discuss future goals (What do you want to be? How many hours do you study? What is your biggest goal this year?).
- Writing - a social media post: a short personal post that shares your feelings and plans. It includes a headline (a catchy title or emojis), the goal (what you want to achieve), the plan (how you are going to do it) and a tip or positive thought using can or will. Model "My Learning Journey": the writer's main goal is to improve English; he is going to study for thirty minutes every night; teamwork with classmates makes learning easier and more fun.
- Assessment corner: vocabulary multiple choice (goal, exams, teamwork, succeed, challenge), Present Continuous gap-fill and a paragraph on "My Goals for the Future".
