Reading texts at a glance
- "Screen Time": Screen time is the total time a person spends looking at screens (phones, computers, tablets, TVs). Not all screen time is the same: some is useful (schoolwork, learning a skill online) and some (watching videos or playing games for hours) may not be. Experts say young people should not spend more than two hours a day on entertainment screen time. Too much time on screens affects the body and mind: tired eyes, headaches, trouble sleeping, harder to focus, stress. To avoid these side effects, take short breaks during meals, before bedtime and while doing homework, balance screens with physical activity, face-to-face time with friends and rest.
- Listening, "Smart Habits for Egypt's Smart Future": Egypt is building smart projects such as the Monorail; too much screen time makes you lose energy and focus; young people are the future of Egypt, and building strong habits prepares us to build a better country.
- "Balancing Screen Time": The writer checks the screen time report and is shocked to find he/she used the phone for almost six hours a day. The new plan: use the phone only one hour after school, turn off social media notifications, keep the phone away while studying, read a book or write in a journal before bedtime, spend more time outside and meet friends in person. The writer hopes to sleep better, feel less stressed and have more time for fun.
- Story Time, "The School Garden Project" (Chapter Four: Growing Success): After three months the garden looks amazing; students eat lunch outside among tomatoes, lettuce and flowers and the cafeteria uses the vegetables. Zeina learns that being a leader doesn't mean always having the answers; it means being responsible for both successes and mistakes. She doesn't blame anyone but looks for solutions. The students use eco-friendly methods (natural fertilizers, no harmful chemicals), which helps the soil and reduces trash, and learn about global responsibility. Students from other classes join, and the garden changes the school: they are "a team with a shared purpose."
- Let's Talk: A mother advises her son to balance entertainment screen time with other activities: set specific times for studying and breaks, avoid screens during meals and before bedtime, turn off notifications and balance with outdoor activities and reading. Conversation Tip: use connectors (but, so, also, because) to make ideas clear and connected.
