«Art and Expression» (الفصل 4) من منهج اللغة الإنجليزية للصف الثاني الإعدادي، الترم الأول. الملخص مقسّم لـ: Learning Objectives، Reading: A World of Imagination، Vocabulary، Listening: Interview with the Artist Youssef، Language in Use: Connectors.
Learning Objectives
- Identify different types of artwork in a text and use context clues to understand new words.
- Use descriptive adjectives to describe art.
- Summarize an interview with an artist and extract details from listening.
- Use the connectors because, so, although and but.
- Write an email to a friend about a kind of art.
Reading: A World of Imagination
- An artwork is anything an artist makes to express ideas and emotions: bright, colorful paintings or amazing sculptures made of smooth stone or shiny metal.
- Artists use imagination and creativity; creativity is also a valuable life skill: it helps us solve problems, think in new and original ways and express ourselves.
- You can see artworks in a gallery; every artwork has a special message, like a hidden story or a strong feeling.
- Reading tip (scanning): know what you're looking for (a name, date or fact), move your eyes quickly down the page, stop when you see the keyword and read around it.
- Why is art a world language? Because it expresses feelings and ideas that everyone can understand without words.

Listening: Interview with the Artist Youssef
Youssef's imagination is the key to his ideas; every artwork must carry a powerful, clear message. He works with various materials: clay and metal (challenging but they give strong, defined forms) and colorful paints that bring out different emotions. He enjoys sharing his lively studio, and his next big exhibit will feature interactive, innovative pieces. Speaking tip: express ideas clearly with excitement, use descriptive adjectives and explain your "why".
Language in Use: Connectors
- because = cause: I didn't give up because I believed in myself.
- so = result: I worked hard, so I improved my skills.
- but / although = contrast: I was tired, but I kept trying. / Although I was tired, I kept trying.
- Examples: Rahma was smiling although she wasn't feeling well. Omar didn't study, so he failed the test. I was nervous because it was my first time on stage.
Reading: Mahmoud Mokhtar
Mahmoud Mokhtar (born 1891) was a very important national artist and one of the famous Egyptian sculptors. He mixed ancient Egyptian art with modern European styles, learned to sculpt as a child and went to art schools in Egypt and Paris. His most famous work is Nahdat Misr Statue (a woman and a Sphinx symbolizing Egypt's history and agriculture), placed in a public square in Cairo in 1928. Another piece, al-Khamaseen, shows a peasant woman battling sandstorms. He promoted Egyptian identity, wrote articles to encourage art appreciation, exhibited in Paris and died in 1934. A museum in Cairo shows his art.
Story Time: The Adventure of the Hidden Island, Chapter One: Different, but connected
Four friends (Hany, Faris, Malik and Sami) find an old map of a "Hidden Island" across the sea. Hany says, "Let's go on an adventure!" Faris adds that they have the freedom to explore but must respect nature and each other. They pack food, water, a compass and notebooks and agree "No one is the boss. We work together and listen to everyone's ideas." Malik draws the scenery and shy Sami feels free to share his ideas. They are all different but respect each other's thoughts.
Let's Talk: At the Museum
A tourist and an art teacher discuss modern art: a sculpture made of paper and metal, creativity and original materials. Some work is not famous yet but is still meaningful; recognition may come later because it takes time for people to connect with an artist's style; even simple art can have a powerful message. Conversation tip: share your opinion and ask the other person what they think.
Writing: An Email to a Friend
Start with "Hi [name]," say why you are writing, use short simple sentences and finish with "Write back soon!" or "Talk to you later!". Use words such as artist, symbol, amazing, creativity, imagination, star, actress, original. In the model email, Ayman writes that art is more than painting; examples: Omar Sharif (world-famous Egyptian movie star) and Amina Rizk (an Egyptian actress known for roles as a kind mother).
Common Mistakes
- Using "although" and "but" together in one sentence.
- Using "so" for a reason (use "because" for the cause).
