Learning Objectives
- Identify the main idea and supporting details in a motivational article and guess meanings from context and time expressions.
- Listen to a story and identify feelings and choices.
- Describe challenges and how to overcome them; give advice using suggestion phrases.
- Use the past simple and the past continuous (and connectors because, so, although).
- Write a paragraph about "A challenge you faced and overcame".
Reading: Overcoming Challenges (Soha)
Soha enjoyed English, but grammar (especially the passive voice) became very difficult. After failing a quiz she felt discouraged, but she showed determination: she watched videos, practiced with a friend and made grammar posters. She slowly improved, passed her next quiz and felt proud: "It takes courage to keep going, even when something feels difficult." Lesson: take it step by step, ask for help and don't give up. Time expressions (after that, then, finally) help us understand the order of events.

Listening: Laila's Story
Laila trained for six months for a long race in her city (running every morning, practicing breathing, eating healthy food). Halfway through she tripped and fell, her knee bled and she felt weak and upset. A helper asked if she wanted to stop; she said "No. I worked too hard to quit now" and finished the race. She said: "I didn't win the race or a medal, but I won against my fear." Her attitude is determined. Listening tip: pay attention to tone and emotion.
Language in Use: Past Simple and Past Continuous
- Past simple: actions that started and finished in the past. She fell during the race.
- Past continuous (was/were + verb-ing): an action in progress at a specific moment or interrupted in the past. I was reading a story at 10:00 yesterday.
- Interrupted actions: While she was running, she fell down. / She was running when she fell. (long action in past continuous, short interrupting action in past simple).
- Examples: While I was walking to school, I saw my friend. We were eating dinner when the phone rang. It was raining when we left the house.
Reading: Facing Traffic Challenges
Cairo has big traffic jams that cause pollution and stress. Egypt is working to solve the problem: new metro lines (Line 3 and Line 4), bridges such as Tahya Misr Bridge and 6th of October Bridge, an electric train, a monorail, flyovers and tunnels. People now use public transportation more, and Egypt wants more roads, bridges and train lines to make Cairo cleaner and easier to move around.
Story Time: The Little Inventor, Chapter Three: Inspiring Success
On the day of the fair all the children displayed their work. Amal's robot said: "Be yourself. Never give up!" The children who laughed now admired her hard work and creativity. The teacher said she showed determination and honesty. Amal felt proud, not because she won a prize but because she expressed herself honestly, used digital tools responsibly and showed empathy; she inspired others to follow their dreams.
Let's Talk: When Things Get Hard
Hany gave a short speech to his class. He was nervous and felt discouraged when he made a mistake, but he stayed calm and kept going. When he was asked a question he wasn't sure of, he said honestly that he would do more research. Connectors: because, so, although (I felt discouraged because I made a mistake.). Phrases for problems: "It's difficult to...", "I have trouble with...". Phrases for solutions: "It might be a good idea to...", "How about...?", "Maybe we should...", "I suggest...".
Writing a Paragraph
A paragraph has a topic sentence, 2-4 supporting sentences (use linking words: because, for example, then, also) and a concluding sentence. Write 90-100 words about a challenge you faced and overcame using challenge, courage, discouraged, determination, obstacle, stressed, creativity, inspired.
Review 1 (Units 1-3)
Review covers digital natives, trends, communicate, footprint, safe posting, active vs passive footprints (active: what you choose to share; passive: data collected by websites), past simple vs past continuous, and the story of Amal (Yara helped by giving ideas; Amal was curious, brave and confident).
Common Mistakes
- Using past simple for the longer background action (While I walked... → While I was walking...).
- Forgetting the past participle/-ing forms.
