Language in Use: Superlative Adjectives

We use superlatives to show the greatest degree of something, and we use the.

• Add -est: tall → the tallest.
• One vowel + one consonant: double the consonant: big → the biggest.
• Ends in -e: add -st: nice → the nicest.
• Consonant + y: change y to i and add -est: happy → the happiest. Examples: This tree is the tallest tree in the park. Nora is the happiest girl in the class.

Story Time: The Last House

Sami is a skilled carpenter who has built strong houses and beautiful furniture for many years. When he is tired, the village king asks him to build one last house as a gift to the village. Sami agrees but his heart is not in it. He uses weak wood and does not check the windows or doors. When the house is finished, the king gives him the keys: the house is a gift for Sami. A non-fiction text tells true information. It has an introductory sentence, true details, adjectives, and a closing sentence. Example: "Heroes Who Fight Fires" about Omar, a firefighter who wears a thick protective uniform and a helmet, checks his equipment, and uses hoses, ladders, and oxygen to save lives. His job is dangerous but he is proud of it.
