ملخص: Advanced Cyber Threats
Learning Objectives
- Explain advanced fraudulent threats.
- Mention ideas for countering advanced cyber threats.
- Propose a plan to counter distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
What Are Advanced Cyber Threats?
Hackers are highly skilled attackers who use sophisticated methods to harm us or steal our information. Advanced cyber threats are not just simple viruses. They are carefully planned attacks that exploit specific weaknesses in systems and devices, or even in our own behavior as users. Like a thief who watches a house, tries the back window or pretends to be a repairman, hackers try several ways to get in.
Ransomware
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts your files (making them unreadable) or locks your device, then demands a sum of money (a ransom) to give access back.
- How it spreads: suspicious emails, malicious websites, malicious links, or downloading software from an untrusted site.
- Once inside, it quickly encrypts files and a ransom message appears.
- Protection: do not open suspicious emails or links, download only from trusted sources, keep antivirus software and security updates current.
Advanced Social Engineering
Social engineering is not a hack of hardware or software, but a hack of minds. It is the art of tricking people into revealing confidential information or doing things that threaten their security. Advanced methods:
- Spear phishing: an advanced phishing attack aimed at specific people or organizations, using highly personal and convincing emails or messages. The attacker gathers details such as your name from social media and websites to gain your trust.
- Pretexting: the attacker invents a fake story or scenario, for example pretending to be a technical support employee or a bank official, to obtain information or make you act.
- Baiting: the attacker offers something attractive, such as a free USB drive containing malware, hoping you will use it.
To tell a real message or call from a fake one, be careful and question requests for personal information.
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks
Imagine a popular website suddenly receiving a huge number of visits at the same time because an attacker ordered it. The site becomes so congested that it cannot serve visitors and stops working, like a street blocked by too many cars.
- The attacker uses many compromised devices, called botnets, to send massive numbers of requests to a server or online service.
- This slows the service down or disables it and prevents legitimate users from reaching it.
- Effects: businesses and users cannot use the service.
- The aim of a DDoS attack is to disable a website or online service, not to steal data.
Key Points
| Threat | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ransomware | Encrypts files or locks devices and demands a ransom |
| Spear phishing | Targets specific people with personal fake messages |
| Pretexting | Uses a fake story or role to get information |
| Baiting | Offers something attractive (such as an infected USB) |
| DDoS | Floods a service with requests using botnets to disable it |
Always be careful and smart online. You are the first line of defense in protecting your digital world.
