Grammar Rules

Rule name: Active and passive voice Active voice: the subject performs the action. Structure: subject + verb + object. Example: Engineers built the canal. Passive voice: the subject receives the action. Structure: subject + be + past participle (+ by + agent). Example: The canal was built by engineers. Tenses in the passive: present simple - Tourists visit the Pyramids / Arabic is spoken throughout Egypt; past simple - The Suez Canal was opened in 1869; present perfect - The Nile has been called Egypt's lifeline / This portrait has been drawn by my sister; past continuous - A kite was being flown by Shady; present continuous - The packages are being delivered. When to use the passive: 1) the agent is unknown (The pyramid was constructed thousands of years ago); 2) the agent is unimportant (Cotton is grown in the Nile Delta); 3) the agent is obvious (The criminal was arrested); 4) in formal or scientific writing (The experiment was conducted carefully). The agent (by + noun) can be omitted when unknown, unimportant or obvious. Summary: use the active when the subject/doer is important; use the passive when the receiver of the action is more important; the passive is common in formal, academic and scientific writing.

Language Skills & Functions

  • Reading - The Crossroads of Civilizations: Egypt, at the northeastern corner of Africa, is a natural bridge between Africa, Asia and Europe. The Sinai Peninsula is its only land bridge to Asia. It controls the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The Suez Canal, completed in 1869, created a direct water route between Europe and Asia, eliminating the long journey around Africa. The Nile flows north for over 4,000 miles; where it meets the Mediterranean it forms the fertile Nile Delta, one of the world's most productive agricultural regions.
  • Listening - "I Am Hammurabi, King of Babylon": Mesopotamian soil was fertile because of flooding from two rivers; the Code of Hammurabi was important because it made laws equal for everyone; scribes kept records and wrote stories on clay tablets; ziggurats were built to show power.
  • Listening - "A Tourist Diary on Two Civilizations": the tourist visits Egypt (Temple of Karnak, Valley of the Kings, where Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered) and Greece (the Parthenon in Athens); both civilizations are remembered for art and culture.
  • Reading - Ancient China, the Middle Kingdom: China believed itself the center of the world; powerful dynasties (Shang, Zhou, Han) ruled vast territories. The Great Wall was built to protect people from northern invasions. Paper, printing, gunpowder and the compass originated in China. The Silk Road carried silk, tea and porcelain and exchanged goods, ideas and technology. Agriculture thrived along the Yellow and Yangtze rivers. The Terracotta Army, thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, guards the tomb of the first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.
  • Speaking: promote tourism in Egypt with three reasons (historical, geographical, cultural); present an ancient civilization (location, what makes it unique, an achievement, why it should be remembered); describe a merchant's journey along the Silk Road.
  • Descriptive essay: uses vivid language to make the reader feel as if they are there. Structure: introduction, body paragraphs (each focusing on one aspect such as sights or sounds), conclusion. Use the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch), strong adjectives and adverbs (the enormous, fluffy cat; walked swiftly), transitions (first, next, then, finally), a logical order and a short outline. A simile compares using "like" or "as" (The moon was like a glowing pearl); a metaphor states that something is something else (The moon was a glowing pearl). The model essay is "A Beach at Sunset".

Solved Exercises

Exercise 1. Change to the passive: "Ferdinand de Lesseps designed the Suez Canal." Answer: The Suez Canal was designed by Ferdinand de Lesseps.

Exercise 2. Choose: "The new library ______ last year." (was building / built / builds / was built) Answer: was built - past simple passive; the library receives the action.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out "be": "The Pyramids built by ancient Egyptians" -> "The Pyramids were built by ancient Egyptians".
  • Using "are visited" with an active meaning: "Many tourists are visited the Nile" -> "Many tourists visit the Nile".
  • Forgetting the past participle: "Underground water finds" -> "Underground water is found".
  • Adding "by" with a vague agent (by people).
  • Using a metaphor with "like" (that is a simile).

Quick Revision Checklist

  • Active: subject does the action.
  • Passive: be + past participle (+ by agent).
  • Passive for unknown, unimportant or obvious agents and formal writing.
  • Egypt connects Africa, Asia and Europe; the Sinai Peninsula links it to Asia.
  • The Suez Canal was completed in 1869.
  • The Nile flows north for over 4,000 miles and forms the Delta.
  • Hammurabi's code made laws equal for everyone.
  • China: Great Wall, Silk Road, Terracotta Army, four great inventions.
  • Descriptive essay = five senses + similes + metaphors.
  • A simile uses like/as; a metaphor does not.
